Happiness may come naturally to some and a little less so to others; however, there are certain habits that can contribute to our unhappiness. In life, our habits are often what make us who we are.
With that said, yes, there will be circumstances beyond your control that will make you unhappy at times. However, if you find yourself unhappy a lot of the time, it’s likely that your mindset and habits are to blame.
Of course, this article isn’t meant to cause any harm or to criticize. Instead, it is a chance to observe and even highlight some of the habits in your life that may be contributing to your unhappiness.
1. They are control freaks.
In life, there are some things we can control and some that are beyond our control. If you do not understand or refuse to see the things that are beyond your control, you are going to have a tough time.
2. They expect perfection.
Perfection is a pipe dream that does not exist. Nothing in this world is perfect, and if your expectations are perfection, then you are setting yourself up for failure. Not only that, but trying to be perfect will set you up to constantly fight yourself and life in general.
3. They compare.
It is far too easy to play the comparison game these days. Social media has made it so easy for us to see every highlight of everyone’s lives, and then we compare ourselves and our lives to that. The thing is, people only show you what they want you to see, so you are comparing yourself to a work of fiction.
4. They have destination sickness.
Destination sickness is a nice way of saying you are always waiting for the future. “One day I will be happy when I can ______,” or “One day I’ll be happy when I have ______.” The thing is, you have to choose happiness now if you want it.
5. They stay alone.
When you’re feeling down, it’s easy to want to be alone. This habit, on the other hand, will only make you sad. Society is important to us, and we need other people. We get stuck in our heads without them, which is probably not a good idea if you are already sad.
6. They think they are victims.
There are some people who always get hurt. They choose to be the victim all the time, no matter what. Don’t get me wrong; there are times when we really are the sufferers. But sometimes you just have to accept things as they are and make the best of them.
7. They complain.
People who complain only think about what’s wrong or bad. At the same time, this changes their attitude and makes them feel bad. You need to be able to show thanks if you want to be happy.
8. They are hypercritical.
We’ve all met that person who looks at everyone and always finds something wrong with them. Anything someone does is never enough, and there’s always a reason to point out their flaws. In the same way that whining does, this will only make you think negatively.
9. They have addiction issues.
The brain changes when you’re addicted. We all have habits that can become addictive, but when you start drinking a lot of alcohol every day or going to the casino every day, you are changing the way your brain works so that you only find pleasure in those things. In turn, you will deprive your brain of the hormones it needs to have fun.
10. They won’t take any blame for anything.
At some point or another, fate will hurt us all, but we are still in charge of our lives. Even though you might not be able to change what happens to you, you can change how you handle it.
